Treat the Eden Engine as both your base and your route forward. Prepare aboard the train, leave with a clear objective, return before cold and combat exhaust the crew, then turn recovered materials into repairs, equipment and train upgrades.

A practical first-run loop
- Read the active tutorialThe current development build includes a tutorial level and additional tutorial objectives. Keep the whole crew on the same step.
- Prepare on the trainCheck warmth, equipment, inventory space and the objective before leaving the Eden Engine.
- Pick one expedition goalSearch a ruin, recover a named resource or follow the prompted objective instead of wandering until the cold decides the route.
- Budget the returnTurn back while the crew still has time, visibility and ammunition. The official store describes blizzards as blinding, slowing and eventually suffocating.
- Refine and repairUse the train's crafting, weapon and repair facilities to convert salvage into the next run's capacity.
- Choose the route northDevelopment news describes levels with multiple exits. Treat the exit as a crew decision, not an automatic next step.
The Eden Engine is the center of every decision
Frostrail is not simply an open-world shooter with a train in the background. Official store copy describes the steam-powered train as refuge, transport, storage and the only way forward. It must be fueled, powered, operated, expanded and defended.
That makes preparation a real part of the run. Supplies kept aboard can support later repairs and construction, while supplies carried into the snow must justify their weight and risk. Exact beta inventory limits are not published here because current values may differ from older screenshots.
Cold turns distance into a resource
The wasteland offers settlements, wreckage, underground areas and strongholds, but distance from the train increases exposure. The official description says the blizzard can blind, slow and suffocate, and that heat is survival.
A beginner mistake is to measure a route only by visible loot. Measure the return as well: weather, remaining ammunition, the crew's position and whether a fight can cut off the shortest path home.
Fight when the return is worth the cost
Frostrail's combat is an FPS layer inside a survival economy. Revenants and other horrors occupy the same spaces as salvage, while ammunition and repair capacity must also support the next expedition.
Use cover, keep the crew from blocking one doorway, and avoid spending the last useful ammunition on enemies that do not protect an objective. Weapon balance is still pre-release; this guide does not rank guns from screenshot values.
Use the beta as a changing build
The May development update names new tutorial content, progression between levels, multiple exits, reworked dungeons, train defense, Relics, clothing and repair workstations. Those additions show how quickly the structure can change before Early Access.
When a number matters, tie it to the build that displayed it. When a mechanic is not documented, use the report tool instead of filling the gap with a rule from another survival game.
